Why Have a Cat?

There are tons of reasons to own a pet, especially cats. Having a cat can be a great way to teach kids about responsibility. Cats are generally low-maintenance and can offer companionship as well. Most young children are more than capable of taking care of a cat, whether it’s changing the litter box, feeding, or even basic grooming.cats1

Honestly, and I think I’ve ranted about this before, I don’t really understand why people get pets. To me it just seems like an added burden of responsibility for something that you’ll get attached to and then die within your lifetime. You get so close to it just to pay for it and watch it die. I understand that they can be useful tools in emotional health but generally speaking, just for the sake of having an animal, I don’t get it. Also wouldn’t we prefer these animals in their natural habitats if we cared about them so much?

Moving on to cats specifically –  I can’t stand them. Sorry to be so blunt but maybe it’s just because I live in an area where there are so many. Either way, I think they’re obnoxious creatures who when you give them a finger take the whole hand. With this in mind, I’m really hard pressed to think of reasons why you would want to get a cat. Unless you have a severe rodent problem, I just don’t get it.

There are so many other animals and pets to choose from, why would you pick a pet that owns the house? My friends parents owns two cats and they literally won’t let you sit on the same sofa as them when they’re on it. And, if you sit on it when they’re not on it, they’ll happily stroll over and throw you off. cat

That’s the other thing about cats – they’re pretty vicious! The number of times my cat-loving friends will come up to me with scratches on their arms saying that their cat scratched them. Why would you own a pet that attacks you? I just don’t understand the concept. It baffles me when people go up to a cat to stroke it, it hisses at them, and they respond with “aw, so cute!”. Like, no. This isn’t Puss in Boots. The cat is only cute if it has massive eyes and speaks in a Spanish accent. Tell me I’m wrong, but you better follow up with a really good reason as to why. Sometimes I think a cat is cute from a distance – mostly kittens, mind you – but that doesn’t mean I’m going to take one home now, does it? No. There’s so much more to getting a pet than just owning a cute animal. That’s what I think they mean when they say that a puppy isn’t just for Christmas. You have to feed it, take it outside, take it to the vet, give it vaccinations, and entertain it. To be honest, that’s probably not even everything!
